Energy and climate change

The excessive consumption of energy is one of the main causes of the greenhouse effect, which gives rise to climate change. It is without doubt the most serious environmental problem we face on our planet.

Navarra is not far-removed from this worldwide complex challenge, the central theme of which is energy and its use. Leer más

Failure to face up to this challenge may entail serious consequences for health, the economy, employment and biodiversity.

Navarre is noteworthy for the considerable advances it has made in the production of renewable sources of energy.  In 2007, it generated the equivalent of 63% of electricity consumption via renewable means (around 14% of final energy consumption).

However, the production of renewable sources is unable to counteract the major increase in energy consumption and consequent CO2 emissions. Indeed, in 2007 CO2 emissions in our region were 37% higher than those in 1990. Energy consumption is now the main component of the ecological footprint in our autonomous region.
